Austria Claims Victory for 2014 Written by on May 11, 2014 | 8 Comments

With a big-ballsy Bond-like ballad, Austria rose like a phoenix from the flames tonight to win the Eurovision Song Contest, only 4 years after returning to the stage from a break and a long dry-spell of 48 years since they last won.

From the very first artist announced for the 2014 contest to the last song performed on the 2014 stage in Copenhagen, Conchita Wurst and the song ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’ had served as an ambassador for many searching for tolerance at this years proceedings after controversy dogged the contest.   “This night is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom”.

Scoring a rowsing victory with 290 points, over The Netherlands 238 points, and Swedens’ 218 points, it appears broadcast ORF will bring the big 60th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest and the associated celebrations to Vienna next year.

Congratulations to Conchita! That was an amazing victory and one that I never even dreamed possible.

I bet the EBU are ecstatic that the 60th anniversary (and release of the archives) is going to happen in one of the member nations that has been with the contest for most of those 60 years.

    Great win for Conchita!!

Laughing my ass of as “Ewan’s favourites” The Common Linnets kept stacking up points 😉

PAtrick,I think it’s clear that personally Calm Before The Storm was never for me… in the same breath happy to acknowledge that it’s “accessible country and western” as Lordi was “Accessible rock”. The sales of the song, and hopefully the subsequent album sales will be good for the Contest’s relevancy to the music industry. So I’ll like that bit… but the song itself does nothing for me (…much as ‘Satellite’ still refused to float my boat).

  4. I like Mariya Yaremchuk much more…
My top was Ukraine, Romania and Sweden. Austria was somewhere in the middle

“it appears broadcast[er] ORF will bring the big 60th anniversary Eurovision celebrations to Vienna next year.”

They’ll be hosting Eurovision just a few weeks after the 59th anniversary, so celebrating the 60th anniversary a year in advance would seem a little premature, to say the least.

Austria will be hosting the 60th CONTEST, a year before the 60th anniversary. Let’s try not to confuse people.

  6. Ewan Spence says:

Agreed on the confusion avoidance, slightly tweaked as a result!

    Who is Chris? 😉

Now you;re being picky, not-Chris… lol
