In this week’s Newsletter we are reviewing all of the songs selected for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest so far, and looking at the final songs to be announced coming up in the final week of announcements.
Robertson’s Reflection now looks at the Russian song which is certainly in the mix for victory, and ponders over what a Russian hosting of Eurovision would be like. He urges fans not to be scared of that possibility.
One would expect less Eurovision fans to travel to a Russian contest, for the bluntly obvious reason that the treatment of gay fans would be a huge safety concern. Whilst not claiming to be an expert on the political balance in Russia today on this matter, I would be confident that fans would be ok. I certainly would be pushing for plenty of ‘safe space’ zones, and extra control around places such as a Eurovision Village. However Sweden this year is not going to be security void after some terrible terrorist actions in recent years, and indeed I would expect any Eurovision to need to offer high-level security wherever we end up. The dangers do lie outside of the bubble, and like all trips abroad caution is needed by each individual.
