Swiss Songs, San Remo and Swinging Sisters: In the Newsletter! Written by on October 6, 2014 | 2 Comments

With the first songs in the pipeline for Eurovision 2015 now out in public view, it’s time for another update on what is happening in the Eurovision world. Make sure you view the latest ESC Insight Newsletter to keep you up to date with all the Eurovision news.

In this edition the newsletter looks at some of those bizarre names trying to represent Switzerland and Malta next year, as well as some subtle rule changes from host broadcasters and the updates on all things Junior Eurovision.  Our Newsletter Editor Ben Robertson writes a piece about Italy’s change of heart in Eurovision and their change of strategy for next year in Robertson’s Reflection.  Read a snippet below:

“Italy’s relationship to San Remo as the first and as the sacred song competition has left their relationship to Eurovision always a little troubled. Italy has left the Song Contest on four different occasions, and each time citing different reasons. Eurovision’s tarnished reputation with its sequins and silliness struggles to translate itself into something on a level playing field than what is presented via San Remo.

As EBU’s Executive Supervisor, Svante Stockselius managed to bring Italy back into the contest after a 14 year hiatus in his last act before resignation at the start of 2011. It was a nervous Italy that did return. Raphael Gualazzi won the newcomers competition in San Remo that year and then has the responsibility to represent his homeland in Germany. If he flopped with his jazzy number, no loss of faith and reputation would ensue. His second place finish and huge winning margin of the jury vote was a shock to many a commentator. Italy was back and Italy was in business.”

  1. Carola Martin says:

Mea Culpa was in the Portuguese NF, NOT the Spanish NF.

  2. We know. As soon as I saw it I thought somebody would pick up on that. That it passed both me and Ewan by in editing is a bit ridiculous.

Whether it was in Portugal or Spain would probably not make any difference at the end of the day, it wouldn’t have made it to Copenhagen. At least it looks like winning OGAE Second Chance (I know it got the Swedish 12, final results aren’t out yet)
