Great podcast. Thanks a lot!
I guess that people not living in Germany don’t get that Cascada’s victory is a massive blow to ESC’s reputation and credibility here in Germany. Even respectable papers backed Lena and Roman in the last three years and founded their hope that ESC might finally become a credible song contest on the German choices. In contrast to their approach of the last years, most major respectable papers have published scathing reviews since Cascada’s victory. My daily paper (one of our biggest and most respected ones) f. e. did not mince words and called ‘Glorious’ saccharine shit and Natalie a yokel. They went on to describe the German entry for Malmö as chavvy and catering to the lowest desires of those yearning for silly entertainment. All in all, our respectable media will either ignore or bash ESC again this year, and even if Cascada win, they will get nothing but scorn and derision. That is a huge difference to Lena’s victory which was even celebrated by papers like Frankfurter Allgemeine or Süddeutsche.
You won’t find any scorn or derision in Frankfurter Allgemeine’s report on Unser Song für Malmö. https://www.faz.net/aktuell/gesellschaft/eurovision-song-contest-glorious-von-cascada-ist-unser-song-fuer-malmoe-12081147.html
Thanks for the podcast. I also would be interested in Terry Vision’s opinion on LaBrassBanda, since watching TV I got the impression he enjoyed their performance. (And he was stunned by Lena’s Neon.)
Z.
I was referring mostly to Süddeutsche’s ‘Tortenschlacht’. Anyway, I do not expect the FAZ to do serious reviews on Cascada’s work either. The coverage will probably be completely different from what they did in the last three years … if there is any to begin with. The article you linked to is proof of that imo. It is lame and disinterested. In fact, I prefer Süddeutsche’s wrath because that reaction shows that they are at least passionate about ESC.
