Eurovision Insight Podcast: Once More, With Financial Backing Written by on January 2, 2013 | 5 Comments

Into 2013 with the Insight podcast, and two more internal artist selections give us names for Georgia and Macedonia.

It would be remiss of us to not mention the rumours that are floating around the internet (rumours mostly started by her own Twitter account to be fair) of a certain Lys Assia. We at ESC Insight are sure she would have heard the ‘you don;t og back’ rule, but apparently not. It’s not as if she hasn’t experienced what it’;s like to return after victory.

And while we just miss SVT Thursday for the podcast, I worked hard on that jingle, so we’ll play it anyway!

Eurovision Insight Podcast: Once More, With Financial Backing

With news of two more internal selections, asking why Azerbaijan is not running MST3K, and reminding a few performers why you should never go back. With music from Lys Assia.

Is there any new news on the Turkish situation because the last time you mentioned them you said they were in discussion with the EBU. I would hate to lose Turkey they are one of the Eurovision superpowers.

  2. Ewan Spence says:

I think superpower is a bit over egging the pudding, certainly they’ve worked out a formula. As to news, there are always mutterings, but there is nothing concrete that I personally would be happy posting.

  3. Aaron Chahal says:

They are a superpower in my books, them, Greece (in decline), Azerbaijan and I would say Sweden are the current Eurovision superpowers. Who would always be in contention for first or would get into the top 10 with relative ease. By superpower I mean of late otherwise Ireland and the United Kingdom would be on that list and that would sound ridiculous nowadays. But I am still sad for Turkey they are normally my favourites them and Greece.

Touche, a fair point. Although I do think every Contest partially resets each country and expectations, there are always countries that will perform better than others. Given your definition, would you not also include Russia and possibly Ukraine?

  5. Aaron Chahal says:

Yes but their is always a few countries that do well and for me the Swedes usually have a good placing due to the fact they have perhaps the best selection process out of any country. For Azerbaijan they throw money and a massive Pr campaign to get the high placing but it will be interesting to see if they will stop this now. I would add Ukraine because somehow by some miracle they pull of good results from the most dodgiest selections. However for me Russia have been in decline since Dima Bilan won in 2008 and I believe last year was a one off in the decline of Russia.
