“I’m a little gay boy, and I’ve loved Eurovision ever since I remember.”
At last weekend’s Eurovision in Concert, Ewan took the chance to sit down on with the working drag queen that is Conchita Wurst, and the private person that is Tom Neuwirth to discuss attitudes, dreams, songs, Shirley Bassey, and Austria’s entry into this year’s Song Contest.
Settle in for an in-depth Insight podcast, mixing in musical highlights with discussions and thoughts on the beard, what it represents, and why ‘Rise Like A Phoenix‘ brings the story of Tom and Conchita full circle.
Eurovision Insight Podcast: In-depth with Conchita Wurst
One of the most recognisable performers at this year’s Song Contest is Austria’s Conchita Wurst. During the weekend of Eurovision in Concert, ESC Insight’s Ewan Spence caught up with the singer to find out more about Ms Wurst, and the mysterious Tom Neuwirth.
As an aside, I really enjoyed spreading my interviewing wings at Eurovision for once, as opposed to chairing the Juke Box Juries, herding Terry Vision around, and getting ready for our daily shows from Copenhagen. We here at ESC Insight would love your thoughts on the format, and if you’d like to hear more shows in this vein.

That was great. It’s so much more satisfying to hear a real conversation.
Very good, Ewan. More like this with others if possible.
thank you for that!
I admit to thinking that Conchita was just an Austrian “Lilly Savage” comedy act after 2012, but have a lot more respect for her after listening to that interview.
I hope you get chance to do more proper interviews as they are always more interesting than the typical 2 minute PR puff pieces we normally get from everyone once the ESC conveyor belt starts rolling. Unless Terry is doing them of course 😉
Thanks Peter. It needs a lot of commitment from the artist, 30-45 minutes of diary time. They can do 15 puff pieces in that time! I will be asking a few though.
Thanks for this. Excellent interview. Far better than the normal interviews we’ve had from Conchita during ESC, as they’re just too short.
Found out a lot more about her than I knew before. Love her even more 🙂
