So that result happened.
Now it’s the morning after the night after the afternoon rehearsal, and the core ESC Insight team can gather round a morning coffee to go over the results of the first semi-final of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. Can we work out what went wrong for the six countries going home, and what are the chances of the ten who we’ll see again on Saturday?

Based on what I heard last night in the feedback off the TV, Cyprus and Slovenia both were terribly off key in the most vital part of the song.
Croatia was good, but the main singer did sound to be over singing the song.
So, the official line is that the Serbian outfits were meant to be like patchwork dolls because “we all have the angel and devil within us.” But I agree, the change in costumes completely destroyed the performance. The staging looked more like two women fighting over a third on.
Russia definitely surprised me. I’m with Steven, she definitely won me over last night.
Ireland may do better than people thought it was going to, but it will not win and will be lucky to get Top Ten.
Sometimes you guys say some crazy shit. lol Montenegro was absolutely horrible! It was an absolute joke! It is acts like Montenegro that makes British people think Eurovision is a joke. Also, how the hell would Winny Pooh do better than Birgit. That would have been another joke. I am SO happy that Montenegro didn’t make it into the final, and even happier that a serious song like Birgit’s beat that ridiculous joke and sham of Winny Pooh.
Denmark forgotten about very quickly because of Ukraine? Russia was before Ukraine as far as I know…
Birds is doing second best of all the songs on iTunes across Europe. Don’t count it out.

Wow. Talk about overthinking things. And what a song to go all high-concept over!
Jack – with you on this one. I have never gotten Who See for Montenegro. I am told its a generational thing, and whilst I understand that the contest needs a sense of commercial success (Igranka is currently number 1 in the MTV Balkan charts), this just looked like a red hot mess that I wouldnt want to watch on Saturday night.
Kevin – I think the quickly forgotten about bit was regarding the giant at the start of Ukraine, not about Denmark. In the hall, the first 5 seconds where Zlata was carried in was wiped from memory once she started singing. She is quite the beauty with a wonderful voice. I quickly re-focused on that and not what was, for many, a laughable beginning to the performance.
Sharleen – Ewan said Denmark was forgotten about very quickly if I remember correctly. I agree with you that the giant was forgotten about very quickly. However, somehow the performance wasn’t as strong as I’d hoped it would be. For example Russia came across much stronger to me and I hate that song.
