ESC Insight’s Coverage Of The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017

Following Georgia’s victory in Valetta 2106, expectations were high that Tbilisi would finally host a Song Contest. One of the most successful countries at Junior Eurovision had the chance in 2017 to host the whole Contest.

We’ve gathered together all the links to our articles, podcasts, videos, interviews, and more, on this page. Our story of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 goes something like this…

Articles and Editorial around the 15th Junior Eurovision Contest

Junior Eurovision 2017 Guide Book

Compiled by Samantha Ross and Lisa-Jayne Lewis, we provided a free downloadable eBook guide to Junior Eurovision 2017. This pulled together information from around the internet, including the official site junioreurovision.tv, the artists own pages, coverage from Eurovision community sites, and our own editorial opinions.

The ESC Insight Email Newsletter

Our regular email newsletter is posted throughout the year. During the Junior Eurovision Song Contest two additional editions were published discussing the Contest. Editor John Paul Lucas collated stories from around the Eurovision websites, not just from ESC Insight, as well as providing details on transmission times, methods of watching, and the results.

Details on the Newsletter, access to the archives, and subscription options can be found here on ESC Insight.

Podcasts and Online Audio

ESC Insight’s core product is our audio podcast. This runs throughout the year, fortnightly over the summer months, weekly during the ‘on-season’ period of September-April, and daily from the Press Centre. While its major focus is on the Adult Contest; news, selections, and National Finals from Junior Eurovision are also included in a specific news section as required.

Junior Eurovision 2017 saw us move from the single thity-minute discussion favoured in previous years to a faster paced magazine style format. Anchored by Ewan Spence it featured contributors from ESC Insight and other noted Eurovision voices. Each show included a discussion of the day’s rehearsals andactivities, tourism and profile pieces of Georgia and Tbilis, and interviews with the people behind Junior Eurovision 2017.

This completes the transition of the ‘daily’ shows that was started in Kyiv.

The shows are available to stream direct from ESC Insight, via RSS, or for download through iTunes.

The Daily Podcast Chat Shows

The successful and anticipated daily chat shows were the backbone of the coverage from Tbilis as the weekly ESC Insight podcast switched to a daily schedule. This allowed us to provide more of our trademark in-depth coverage and analysis from backstage, bringing all the news and opinions of the 2017 Contest as it happened, though a rotating line up of guests from the Eurovision websites in the press centre.

Juke Box Jury

In the weekend before arriving Tbilisi, ESC Insight previewed each country’s song in our Juke Box Jury format, with discussion between two judges and host Ewan Spence before rating each song as hit, miss, or maybe.

Digital/FM/AM Radio Coverage

ESC Insight produces a number of worldwide radio syndication packages throughout the year which consists of our magazine format and discussion format shows, radio-edited version of our Juke Box Jury song review show, and a radio-specific package of preview shows designed to give smaller community and local radio stations around the world Eurovision content in the run up to the live shows.

Junior Eurovision 2017 saw a ‘Drive Time’ radio package that consisted of a thirty minute daily show broadcast from Monday 20th November to Saturday 25th November, reporting on the days activities in the run up to the final.

With the continued permission of the EBU, Radio Six International and ESC Insight produced the live radio broadcast of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest which was syndicated around the world. This featured a 15 minute pre-show introduction to the Contest, and a 20 minute post-Contest analysis, as well as the two-hour ten-minute live broadcast of the Contest with a radio-specific commentary team. It was produced by Ewan Spence for ESC Insight in Tbilisi; and by Leo Currie and Tony Currie for Radio Six International in Glasgow.

The show was hosted by Ewan Spence and Lisa-Jayne Lewis, with expert analysis provided by Brent Davidson, Luke Giles, and Anton Kulakov. It also featured interviews with EBU Exceutive Supervisor Jon Ola Sand, JESC 2016 winner Mariam Mamadashvili, and Elaine McDonnell (Mother of JESC 2017’s Irish singer Muireann McDonnell).

Our Junior Eurovision packages were broadcast on stations in the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand, and Singapore.
