Thanks for another great podcast. On Ireland: If they were to remove the pianist to simplify the storyline of the song, would they run a greater risk of being accused of homonationalism? If viewers were to find out that Ryan isn’t gay, they might perceive the act as insincerely adopting a queer staging to pander to the LGBTQ+ contingent and to signal Irish liberal progressiveness. I suspect they’re trying to tread that line between inclusivity on the one hand and authenticity to the performer on the other; from all the reports, it sounds as though it’s not quite working.
Must say I liked the return of the old style podcast.
Lisa-Jayne and Ewan, I think you are getting a touch over-excited about France’s chances of winning. I remember when I heard Mercy for the first time that I had no idea what it was about. I thought it was a decent if slightly plodding number, nothing more. It was only (a) when I read the lyrics and (b) watched the official video, that I felt the full emotional impact. Most of the Saturday night audience won’t have that luxury.
Correction: Sweden was the last contest opener to win in 1984 – not UK in 1976.
I disagree with Eurojock. The new style podcast is more tight in structure. After reading so many about all the performances it was refreshing to have a quick summary of what works and what doesn’t work.
I also would like to support Lisa-Jayne, who in one of the previous podcasts, was positive about the absence of cameras in the arena and the fact that this year, we don’t have 3 minutes videos.
Since 2015 I don’t watch any clip from rehearsals. The clips don’t do justice to the song, the singer or the performance and I would like to keep it a bit of surprise. I read about the performances, so I know what to expect, but it’s still a mystery how it all sounds and looks. It make watching the contest more interesting and fresh.
