The unveiling of the official theme may not inspire as much excitement as allocation draws and national finals, but it can be just as crucial towards shaping the tone of the show. Last year’s ‘Come Together’ tagline was reflected in several aspects of the Swedish hosting and design – not to mention a near-the knuckle joke or two.

This year Ukraine have chosen to ‘Celebrate Diversity’, which – intentionally or not – can’t help but feel a little pointed in the current global political climate. It may also inspire a thinkpiece or five about just how committed to diversity the country – which still has no legal recognition for same sex marriage – actually is. Could the national broadcaster be pre-empting criticism and sending a thinly coded message of support to the many LGBTQ Eurovision fans who are likely to descend on Kyiv in May?

Also in this week’s edition, have Finland and the UK set themselves up for a collision course by choosing stylistically similar torch ballads last weekend? Is Kallay Saunders set for a comeback in Hungary? And most importantly, can anything in the fourth Lithuanian heat hope to top the audio-visual spectacle that was Lolita Zero?

All this, plus your weekly national selection roundup – complete with broadcast times and streaming links – and a look back at what we’ve published here on ESC Insight over the past month.

Enjoy the latest newsletter!
