Two weeks after the start of the season, and some of the major pieces are coming into focus. The big news is of course the choice of host city and with it the choice of the International Exhibition Centre as our venue. Throw in more dates, submission deadlines, and ticket sales for the National Finals, and the 2016/17 Eurovision Song Contest season is building nicely.
Eurovision Insight Podcast: Pack Your Bags For Kyiv
We have a host city, a venue, and enough countries to run a Song Contest. What else has happened in the last two weeks? Ewan Spence brings you the latest news from the world of the Eurovision Song Contest, and some chill time with Jon Henrik Fjällgren.
As this new Song Contest season dawns, don’t forget to keep up to date with all of the Eurovision news by subscribing to the ESC Insight podcasts. You’ll find the show in iTunes (why not leave us a review?), and a direct RSS feed is also available. We also have a regular email newsletter which you can sign up to here.
Just FYI – Those new 2008 ESC YouTube videos are not HD. It’s just the usual standard definition footage run through an upscaler.
Thanks to YouTube’s wonky automatic re-encode engine, the higher nominal resolution gets you a much higher bitrate on both the video and the audio (!), resulting in less encoding artifacts. So it might be considered worth doing just because of that. But we aren’t getting any more picture detail from these upscales. Just a whole lot more bits and pixels being used to make the same standard definition image. And a talking point for the EBU promotion department.
Thanks Eric! (everyone else, what he said!)
