Eurovision Insight Podcast: In-depth With The BBC’s Guy Freeman Written by on May 11, 2016 | 2 Comments

For the last three years, Guy Freeman has been the Head of Delegation for the United Kingdom’s entry into the Eurovision Song Contest. Ewan Spence caught up with him in London to find out his thoughts on Molly and Electro Velvet, the new selection show, and the future of the Contest at the BBC, in our latest In-Depth Insight Interview.

Guy Freeman took on the role of Head of Delegation for the United Kingdom’s entry to organise the entry for Copenhagen 2014, and continues to run the BBC’s Eurovision adventures.

What has he learned over the last three years, what changes have been made for 2016, and what plans are in place for future years? I sat down with Guy just before we left for Stockholm to talk about those issues, the new National Selection show, the creative process, and more.

Eurovision Insight Podcast: In-depth With The BBC’s Guy Freeman

Guy Freeman is now in his third year as the Head of Delegation for the UK. With a return to a national selection show, more input from the music industry, and the lessons from Molly and Electro Velvet, how is the BBC addressing the long term health of Eurovision?

I really enjoyed this Ewan, but I really want to highlight Guy’s reasoning for Eurovision not being a suitable mechanic for an established star in the UK. It sounds perfectly valid – but then, I would be really interested to hear an interview or podcast with someone from another country about why it works for big stars in, say, Russia or even Australia. Why is Eurovision worth it for them and not for British stars?

A very interesting interview – juts what I was wanting after your interview with Hugh. I’m willing to believe that small steps from the outside are actually big steps on the inside of the BBC. Like you I still believe that Guy is taking the UK’s participation forward but I think the fact that no current British star could realistically take so long out of their schedule to compete shows how far we truly are away from Eurovision being part of the mainstream pop scene. Good interview – I like these in depth ones. Enjoy tonight!
