Really enjoying these! I’m glad to hear the consensus that Nina’s vocals were at least good. It’s so hard seeing all the various opinions from fans/press about vocal performances every year that all seem completely conflicting.

Russia’s a good example of having too much money to spend. Maybe they’ll eliminate some of the aspects for the next rehearsal. Personally, I’m glad they’ve over-egged the pudding if not just for the fact it might help the Czech Republic.

As a Brit living in the US I’m very happy Logo is showing the contest! After having watched it in the past on Channel 1 Russia, RTP and TVP’s international channels (and being very thankful to Poland saving me from having to make the moral decision of whether to fork over money to the Russian broadcaster last year) it’s nice to have another option, even if Logo isn’t broadcast in HD on many providers. If you have more than 2 people watching with you it really needs to be on a TV screen and not in front of the computer. I’m giving the Youtube live stream a go this year and will be glad to have no commentary so I can provide it myself. Samantha, maybe Logo can hire both of us to do the commentary next year? I assumed this year it will be broadcast without commentary but I’m sure I’m wrong.

Personally I think the reason Douwe Bob’s performance during Eurovision in Concert worked, was the very fact that there was an enthusiastic audience. “Slow Down” is the kind of song that needs a Malta 2013 approach. It’s a crowdpleaser, it needs the performer high-fiving with the audience, it needs Douwe Bob placing his hand behind his ears (“I can’t hear ya”), it’s the kind of entry that works better when Douwe Bob starts improvising a bit.

And that’s why this first rehearsal seemed so….tame to many. If people paid good attention, director Hans Pannecoucke was clearly instructing Douwe Bob to enthuse the audience as if Hans himself was the audience. I’m curious what you guys think of it.

Here’s how the little 10 sec break will look like Tuesday. Epecially have a look what Douwe does during that break:

  4. ‘Robby The Robot in cellophane’ or ‘David Byrne in an oversized kimono’?

Which is best? There’s only one way to decide…

Great podcasts today and yesterday guys.. See Ewan I DO listen!!!
I’d missed the ‘kitsch in sync’ line.. Brilliant!!

  6. Samantha Ross says:

Ben, I’m with you on getting onto the list of potential commentators! 😉
Part of me hopes that there’ll be some sort of “guide” for new American viewers tuning into the show sight unseen, but I worry that tapping into the UK, Irish, or Aussie streams might involve too many local in-jokes. Maybe we can get Insight’s Alternative Commentary on it? 😉
