Newsletter: Would The EBU Have Disqualified Anna Book? Written by on February 8, 2016

With plenty of news on a bumper weekend of National Final results, a winner in Spain and even some songs of the future to look out for, welcome to another edition of the ESC Insight Newsletter.

As always, our regular columnist Ben Robertson looks at what has been happening in the world of Eurovision in depth. This week he looks at the schlagerskandal in Sweden as Anna Book had her song disqualified by SVT as it was released before Melodifestivalen. But would it have been disqualified from Eurovision by the EBU?

We’ve been left with sticky situations over the last few months, and it’s easy to see some possible problems avoided. Could a song released in Japanese by the same composers be translated and re-phrased in the melody to be a whole new different song? If Emmelie de Forest was just a little more popular and one fan got excited and uploaded it to YouTube last year, would that be too far? Could a plucky Norwegian just enter what has all but been admitted is a re-make of his big local hit from a few years ago?

Let’s go further, and look at some crazy things that could happen. Would the EBU accept one an Eesti Laul finalist this year just being internally selected for next year? Could Azerbaijan have bought Jon Henrik Fjällgren, added the tutek whistle and translated ‘Jag är fri’ for their own purposes? Hey, are those songs I uploaded to the Swiss online platform still eligible for a future Song Contest?

Newsletter’s will be available at the start of each week up until Stockholm – make sure you are signed up today to receive them straight to your inbox.
