In this week’s edition we have the news from selections in Lithuania and Hungary as well as looking forward to this first of many bumper weekends of Eurovision selection shows.
Robertson’s Reflection this week looks back on Terry Wogan’s connection to the Eurovision Song Contest, and how his voice influenced and changed the Contest in ways we still feel to this day.
For many reasons he became synonymous with all things Eurovision. He was a stalwart, attending each and every year and with satellite streaming and the advent of the internet grew a fanbase across the world. By this time, Eurovision was in the 1990’s and Eurovision was dull. Terry wasn’t dull, and carved a niche that had an impact far beyond his fan base. As the Song Contest transformed into the early 2000’s it is impossible not to link it to Wogan’s influence. It became more entertainment, it became more show, it became something worth talking about and commentating on. What Wogan did changed Eurovision and dragged it out of stagnation.
